But I also have a nostalgic side; typically, I am “enthralled” by ceramic tea sets, wooden tea trays, and traditional treats like green rice cakes (banh com), peanut candy, coconut candy... and as mentioned above, my second hobby is “sharing hobbies with others”. Furthermore, since I am a young person myself, I want to hear what other young people have to say about traditional confectionery. That is why I decided to choose Bao Minh confectionery as the main focus, roaming the streets to listen to what young people say.

The “Tour de Hanoi” departed, starting from the T-N mart supermarket near my house. This supermarket is small, but it has almost all types of food products for the family, from fresh vegetables and canned goods to spices and instant noodles... it has almost everything. Heading to the Bao Minh confectionery aisle, I chose a pack of pork fat cakes (banh cha) – a treat I quite like, which is often with me on long trips; the crunchiness and richness of the banh cha have conquered my culinary “taste”.

Strolling to the Bao Minh stall, seeing a girl in a yellow shirt busy looking for something, I greeted her and asked: “What are you looking for? Could you tell me?”. The girl looked quite gentle, but her way of answering was completely confident, showing no sign of shyness. She said that she was looking for Bao Minh sesame candy; her whole family likes eating sesame candy, so she often buys it for the family to eat together.

The young girl's answer felt like it struck a strong chord in my left chest. A little stinging. I was startled; it seems it has been a long time since I had the opportunity to sit with my family for dinner. The girl, she touched my heart a little bit. Smiling in thanks, I turned to the guy on the opposite side who was struggling to find something. Still the same question, I asked what he was looking for. The guy excitedly shared: “I am looking to buy a pack of peanut candy for late-night tea, to discuss things with my friend. He and I often hang out for iced tea, but if it is late at night and no shops are open, we just buy it ourselves to serve our needs. We are all “night owls””. I thought to myself, another “iced tea follower” who stays up late like me, it is quite interesting to meet people with the same hobbies.

Where to go now? I pondered for a while and then decided... to randomize the next destination. And I chose Vinmart Phu Do. Hanoi is strange this year; it is December but the cold has not yet knocked on every door. Sometimes the cold wind blows for a few days, making everyone put away all their summer clothes, pull out all their winter clothes, and buy new things to be ready for the wind. Then, suddenly the next day, the sun is blazing hot, as if the summer sun has not yet let go of the people here.

At Vinmart Phu Do, I only limited myself to asking 2 young people, perhaps a couple in love. Through inquiry, I learned that the female student is from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, and the male student is from Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Both seemed quite excited about Bao Minh products. The female student quickly answered first, when I asked about their favorite product and why they liked it?

The girl seemed quite active, rushing to answer first: “I like durian and mung bean flavors, so I often look for Bao Minh durian-filled green rice cakes. Bao Minh's green rice cakes are softer, and the sweetness is very moderate; sometimes I even eat them for breakfast. (Laughs). The guy seemed gentler, witty in his answer: ”As for me, I like to eat types of cakes that are crispy or hard so I can chew them with a crunch; it sounds fun, and it is also good for training my teeth. That is why I like eating Bao Minh's banh cha”.

I chatted with them for a while longer, some small talk, and they gave me a very interesting feeling. Young people nowadays have more multidimensional ways of looking at life; they are not rigid and do not follow an imposed way of thinking. The previous generation of youth would have a bit more “principles”; for example, if they listened to upbeat music, they would not listen to sentimental music. If they had a Western style, they would be “fully Western” without mixing, or it is rare for someone to like both.

The last stop I chose was Big C Ha Dong. There was a little girl with a small, round, quite funny figure choosing cakes in the Bao Minh confectionery area. Perhaps I would only ask this girl and end my “listening” trip here, because I also had an appointment with a close friend from my “diaper days” who is also near here. That is why I chose Big C Ha Dong as the final point.

The girl I asked, named Duyen, is also a student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The girl spoke quite quickly and a lot, chattering away before realizing I was standing nearby. Knowing I had just asked and she... did not hear anything, I laughed, “Now, can you focus on listening to my question?”. I thought she would be confused, but unexpectedly the result was completely the opposite. The girl answered straight to the point, very confidently, without beating around the bush: “I like Pia cakes the most; Pia cakes are both soft and sweet, but not in a sugary way, and the thin skin is very pleasant to touch. I also eat other cakes, but I am not as “hooked” as I am on Pia cakes...”. Following that was a very long page just like the scene I encountered earlier. To evaluate her confidence on a scale of 100, this girl must have reached... 101 points.

My trip ended happily like that! Previously, I thought that traditional confectionery was perhaps no longer loved by many young people, and I labeled myself “old-fashioned”, but this trip changed my thinking a lot. I realized that it is not because young people are indifferent to tradition, blindly following trends, or forgetting cultural values, but that perhaps sometimes they are just like me—they have not found a common voice yet, or somewhere they have not really been oriented towards the good values of their ancestors that need to be preserved and promoted by supporting consumption from the very products that carry the national soul.

Instead of waiting and evaluating through comments on social media, try taking a walk on the street once and listening to what modern young people are saying about their thoughts, hobbies, and views on life. You will certainly have new, more multidimensional, interesting, and... younger perspectives.

Giới thiệu qua thì tôi là một thanh niên hiện đại chuẩn 100% từ cách ăn mặc đến giao tiếp.
