How to Make Husband and Wife Cake with Traditional Flavor

Ingredients for making Husband and Wife cake

– Soak the mung beans in warm water for a few hours until they expand. Drain the beans and steam them like sticky rice. While the beans are still hot, grind or mash them until smooth.

– Add about 5ml of cooking oil into a pot over low heat, add the mashed mung beans and about 30g of sugar, stir well until the mixture thickens; you can adjust the amount of sugar to suit your taste.

– Wash the pandan leaves, boil them with 400ml of clean water for about 20 minutes, then filter to get the liquid.

– Mix the pandan leaf liquid with 30g of sugar and the tapioca starch until well combined.

– Place the tapioca starch mixture on the stove, stir constantly over low heat until the mixture thickens, then turn off the heat.

– Traditionally, you would fold pandan leaves into small boxes to hold the cake, but to save time, you can use small plastic containers like caramel cups as molds. Grease the molds with a little cooking oil, cut the pandan leaves into short strips, and arrange them in a cross shape inside the molds (as shown).

– Carefully pour a little starch mixture into the mold, then add the mung bean filling and shredded coconut. Finally, pour another layer of the starch mixture on top. Steam the cakes for 20 minutes.
